A metal shank in Goodyear-welted shoes refers to a supportive piece made of metal, often steel or another durable alloy, that is inserted between the insole and outsole of the shoe. 

This shank provides structural reinforcement, adds stability, and supports the arch of the foot. 

In Goodyear welt construction, the welt (a strip of leather or rubber) is stitched to the upper and insole, and the outsole is then attached separately. 

The metal shank enhances the overall stability and durability of the shoe, contributing to its longevity and comfort.

All of our shoes are goodyear shoes or hand welted and have a metal shank.
